I am so excited to be taking part in the Camino Salvado next week. The Salvado is a newly (relatively) established pilgrimage trail from St Joseph’s Church in Subiaco, Perth to the Abbey of New Norcia some 200 km away. The New Norcia abbey was established by Benedictine monk and missionary Dom Rosendo Salvado Rotea OSB (1814 – 1900) in 1847 and the route follows that used by Dom Salvado and his fellow monks when they travelled (mostly on foot) to Perth to picks up supplies.
Dom Salvado’s tomb lies in the abbey church and in the spirit of the Camino de Santiago a celebratory Mass takes place at the end of the trek. The route is approximately 200 kms and takes an average of 6 days to walk. Photos of the New Norcia Church, hotel and monastery are below. More on the walk when I return.
